Overview
Magpie Literacy’s K-2 digital learning experience supports students’ independent learning to ensure they are getting the engaged practice they need to build proficiency in early literacy skills.
Magpie Literacy’s K-2 digital learning experience:
- Aligns with literacy learning research
- Engages students in fun, joyful learning
- Supports students independent learning and practice with feedback
- Builds proficiency in foundational literacy skills
Magpie’s research to date shows that students in all subgroups make statistically significant learning gains (with medium to large effect sizes) in key early literacy skills when they use Magpie for at least 40 minutes per week.
Magpie’s K-2 tools are not designed to require much adult time or interaction once students are in the routine of using Magpie regularly. Magpie tools are designed to provide an effective and independent learning experience for students that propels them towards early literacy proficiency.
The one action Magpie asks Teachers, School Admin and District Admin to take to support Magpie implementation is ensuring students are learning independently in Magpie 45-60 minutes each week.

★Key Action for Teachers, School Admin and District Admin★: Ensure students are learning in Magpie 45-60 minutes each week |
The most important thing you can do to support Magpie implementation is to monitor your Magpie Usage Report weekly and support students to have 45-60 min each week in their schedules to learn with Magpie.
Magpie estimates that K-2 lessons may take ~15 minutes to complete on average, but this will vary by lesson and unit as well as by individual student depending on the scaffolding and support needed.
In addition to students learning in Magpie for 45-60 minutes each week, educators should ensure students are completing at least 2-3 lessons per week on average over time to ensure they experience the core Magpie units in their grade level.
